One thing that you might notice when you examine the chart above, the letters for the year code repeat themselves.
As you go through the process fill in appropriate boxes in the right-hand column by clicking the mouse-pointer on the open circle that is most appropriate.
The date code during these years was just placed on the box.
Now, this doesn't help much in many circumstances, because how likely is it that the box will still be around for as long as the gun exists.
The 740 was only made 1955-1960 so it is pretty easy--1955 was a B and it goes up a letter each year thus ending with G for 1960. They're beautiful forever as long as they're well oiled, nothing sags a few years down the line, when you have a good day or a bad day they have it with you, they don't sleep around, and they're real easy to live with.
